What Is Radon in Water?

Radon is associated most commonly with indoor air, but it can also be present in groundwater.

For properties supplied by groundwater, particularly private wells, testing the water can help determine whether radon is present and at what concentration.

A radon water test is separate from an indoor-air radon test. Testing one does not automatically tell you the radon level of the other, which is why each should be evaluated separately when appropriate.

Private wells are our primary concern, but we can also test municipal water sources.

How Does Radon Water Testing Work?

Our team collects two water samples from the most suitable tap using professional testing kits and following applicable AARST requirements and AccuStar instructions. We follow strict storage, handling, and shipping protocols and submit the samples to AccuStar Labs for analysis.

A full laboratory report is typically available within 3–5 business days of sample collection. We provide the report, review the results with you, and discuss appropriate next steps.

A full laboratory report is typically available within 3–5 business days of collection. We provide the report, review your results, and discuss air-aeration mitigation when needed.

Radon in Water vs. Radon in Air

Radon in water testing and indoor radon testing answer different questions.

Radon in Air

Indoor testing measures radon gas present in the air inside a home or building.

Radon in Water

Water testing evaluates radon present in the property’s water supply.

A homeowner concerned about radon should not assume that testing the water replaces testing indoor air, or vice versa.

For indoor-air concerns, Colorado Radon Mitigation also offers radon measurement and broader professional radon testing services.

Professional Radon Water Testing vs. Test Kits

We encourage homeowner testing to establish a baseline and identify potential mitigation needs. Our professional water-testing service adds trained sample collection and strict handling, storage, and shipping procedures to help avoid errors that could affect results. Our team collects the two samples for this service; homeowner-collected samples are not part of our professional collection service.

What Happens if Radon Is Found in Your Water?

Your laboratory report shows the radon concentration in the water samples. We review the report with you and discuss appropriate next steps based on the results, water source, and applicable local guidance.

ANSI/AARST MW-RN-2020, Section 7.1, recommends mitigation at radon-in-water concentrations of 4,000 pCi/L or greater and considering mitigation above 2,000 pCi/L, subject to applicable local guidance.

Colorado Radon Mitigation offers radon-in-water mitigation and installs air-aeration systems. If treatment is appropriate, we can discuss an aeration system for your property.

Water and indoor-air results must be interpreted separately. The indoor-air 4.0 pCi/L action level is not a water-treatment threshold. For well-water properties, water must be tested and mitigated if necessary before we can guarantee indoor radon levels.

Colorado Radon Mitigation specializes in radon-related services, allowing water testing to be considered alongside other radon concerns at the property.

Clear Testing Process

Professional sampling can provide property owners with a structured testing process rather than relying solely on a consumer test kit.

Air and Water Testing

If indoor radon is also a concern, the team can help distinguish between water testing and indoor-air radon measurement so each issue is evaluated appropriately.

When Should You Test Well Water for Radon?

We recommend radon-in-water testing for properties supplied by private wells. Testing helps identify whether water treatment may be needed alongside any indoor-air radon work. For well-water properties, water must be tested and mitigated if necessary before we can guarantee indoor radon levels.

Water testing can be scheduled on its own or during the same visit as indoor-air radon testing or installation of a soil depressurization system.
